| 11 injured in multi-vehicle crash: Charles Town |
|
Four people were flown by helicopter from the scene of a multi-car accident Friday evening on W.Va. 51.
At approximately 6:40 p.m., calls came in to Jefferson County Central Dispatch about a four-car accident along a hilly stretch of country road, flanked by open fields. A black Ford Escort bearing Maryland license plates was reportedly traveling east on W.Va. 51, when it veered across the center line and struck a silver sport utility vehicle head-on. The SUV then flipped over in the middle of the roadway, with four of its five passengers needing to be flown to area shock trauma centers, said Ed Smith, a fire chief with Independent Fire and Ambulance Co. in Charles Town. “At this time,” Smith said of the victims, “everybody’s alive.” The Escort eventually came to rest against a telephone pole along the side of the roadway. A red Eclipse, which Cpl. V. Tiong of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department said was driving behind the Escort, crashed into a pole in a field alongside the opposite lane of traffic. A fourth vehicle, a red Chevy Blazer, was also involved in the crash, ending up in a field behind the convertible. As other drivers made their way along the road, which stretches from Inwood to Charles Town, they swerved and stopped in attempts to avoid the first accident. A second crash unfolded during this process, Tiong said. The second accident was less serious than the first, and involved a total of three vehicles. “This was the most severe,” Smith said of the first crash. The four passengers in the silver SUV from Virginia flown to shock trauma centers, were all labeled as priority one — or patients with serious injuries, Smith said. In all, 11 people were believed to have been transported from the scene of the accident, he said. In addition to the four who were flown out, four other patients were taken to Jefferson Memorial Hospital, and two others were taken to City Hospital in Martinsburg. An additional patient was labeled as a “trauma code.” Smith said he was not certain Friday evening whether the individual survived. “This is going to take a little bit of time to get an accurate count on,” he said as fire and ambulance company members milled about the scene with police and witnesses. The chaotic scene that surrounded him was not typical of most auto accidents, he said. “Once you go over eight patients, it’s the stage we call a disaster,” Smith said. W.Va. 51 was shut down to traffic traveling in both directions, with the roadway reopening at approximately 8:39 p.m. Ages and additional information about the victims involved in both accidents were not available at press time. This incident occured in Jefferson County. |
