| Fatal truck accident spills toluene; shuts down I-68: Cheat Lake | |||
|
The Monongalia County Sheriff's Department says a truck overturned early Friday on Interstate 68, and started leaking a chemical called Toluene.
Crews say the tanker was carrying 800 gallons of the hazardous liquid. "We believe it was leaking out at about a gallon per minute - it was coming out of the top of the tanker," said Sgt. Johnson with the West Virginia State Police. According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, Toluene is a clear, colorless liquid with a distinctive smell. It is found naturally in crude oil. It's produced when making gasoline and other fuels, as well as making coke from coal. The chemical is also a component used in specialty paints and plastics. It can be dangerous when mixed with water, which was what officials were worried about since it was raining at the time of the crash. The accident happened about 4 a.m. Friday. Crews had the spill contained by 7 a.m. Hazmat crews say it never reached Cheat Lake, or any streams or rivers. Deputies told 12 News the driver of the tractor-trailer is dead. They have called in the state medical examiner's office. Late Friday, authorities released the name of the driver who died at the scene. He is indentified as Paul Stealey, 40 of New Martinsville. The crash is still under investigation. State Police investigators say there were no skid marks at the scene. They are waiting on autopsy results from the State Medical Examiner's Office. Interstate 68 was closed between Cheat Lake and Cooper's Rock, or exits 10 and 15. It took until late afternoon to clean everything up. Quarry Run Road and Route 73 in Monongalia County were also closed. The interstate was reopened late Friday afternoon. School buses and mail service did not run in the Cheat Lake area. This service occured in Monongalia County.
