| Man dies in house fire: Parkersburg |
|
A 46-year-old Parkersburg man died in a house fire on Plum Street early this morning, officials said.
Calvin L. Latham was pronounced dead at 3:52 a.m. after having been pulled from an upstairs bedroom at 1907 Plum St., Wood County Coroner Mike St. Clair said. The Parkersburg Fire Department received the call of a house on fire at around 3:20 a.m. The house was engulfed in flames when fire crews arrived about three minutes later, said Capt. Jason Kuhl of the Parkersburg Fire Department. Three people were in the house and all three were taken to a hospital, Kuhl said. Heavy smoke and flames were coming from the house when crews arrived, said fire Capt. Lyle Dowler. Dowler said they had reports of a man trapped in a second-floor bedroom. Firefighters entered the house, located the man, brought him downstairs and out into the front yard where paramedics immediately began working on him. ‘‘I was told he had a slight heartbeat, but he was not breathing,’’ he said. Paramedics attempted to resuscitate him on scene and in the ambulance on the way to St. Joseph’s Hospital, St. Clair said. Dowler said they were planning to fly him by medical helicopter to Charleston when he passed away. The body is being sent to the state medical examiner’s office in Charleston for an autopsy, but the probable cause of death is looking like smoke inhalation, St. Clair said. St. Clair said he was informed by family that Latham had served with the National Guard in Iraq and was preparing to return soon. A young baby, also in the house, was being sent to the Shriner’s Hospital in Cincinnati for burn treatment, he said. The fire department had over a dozen fire fighters on the scene with equipment used in an external and internal attack, Dowler said adding the majority of the attack was done from within the house. Crews had the fire under control within 15 minutes of arriving on scene and spent an hour to 90 minutes mopping up hot spots. ‘‘The fire got into the walls and between the first and second floors,’’ Dowler said. ‘‘We had to pull down the ceiling on the first floor to get to it.’’ A cause of the fire had not been determined and remains under investigation, Kuhl said. This incident occured in Wood County.

| Factory Street house burns for the fifth time this year: Clarksburg |
|
For the fifth time this year firefighters were called out to the same home on Factory Street in Clarksburg.
This is the second fire there in less than a week. Officials say the fire appears to be "very suspicious." The fire broke out a little before 8:00pm Monday evening. Officials say it started in the living room and quickly spread though out the rest of the home. It took crews about a half hour to get the flames under control. No one lives in the home and no utilities are connected. This is the forth time the house has been set a blaze, while the garage has also burned once. Those fires were all considered suspicious. The state fire marshal will be called in to investigate. This incident occured in Harrison County.
